The United States Census Bureau is a government agency designed to be responsible for data collection and analysis gathered from the US Census. Its headquarters has been in Maryland since 1942. The job of the bureau to collect other essential data such as economic information or basic population demographics. The most important role of the Census Bureau is to collect data for the US Census every ten years, which then helps to determine seats for the US House of Representatives and Congressional districts. The position for director of the Census Bureau is performed by appointment by the current President of the United States. The Census was first designated in the Constitution, when the founding fathers decided that every ten years, information should be gathered about the population. Originally, this information was taken solely to get a feel for populations in order to designate political districts. While this is still in effect today, the Census Bureau also uses the information taken for other purposes.

The US Census is a helpful tool in assisting localities with planning, Government programs, and real estate development. It helps to get a bigger picture of business and governmental economic growth and development, racial and ethnic groups and where they live, and progress of industries like farming or manufacturing. By submitting the "long form" to certain residents, the Census Bureau can garner more in-depth and detailed information that allows them to see a much clearer snapshot of the American household. Businesses can also use Census data to help them plan locations and forecast demands for their products or services. Local areas can use the information to better plan schools, fire and police departments, and road construction. The Census Bureau plays a very instrumental role in gathering and analyzing information that will serve the people of the United States.
